My Experience in French Polynesia

Known as the Sailing Capital of the World, the British Virgin Islands are a true paradise for sea lovers. So bring your passport and your sense of adventure! The main islands include Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke. Each offer something unique, from coral atolls to legendary Rum Painkiller’s! There are more than 50 other smaller islands and cays to explore in this turquoise sea. I was able to travel by ferry…and even hitched a ride on a provision boat! You can always splurge on a charter cruise or private yacht. There is a reason these islands have been known as Nature’s Best Kept Secret. Once you’ve been, you’ll understand why!

Best Ferry Operators:

  • Aremiti
  • Cost: Approximately $20 USD for an adult one-way ticket.
  • Vaeara’i
  • Cost: Approximately $13 USD for an adult one-way ticket.
  • Terevau

Pro tips for booking a ferry:

  • Where to Buy: Directly at the daily ticket windows at the ferry terminals in Papeete or Moorea. Online booking is also available via company websites or third-party platforms like Viator, Tripadvisor, and Agoda.
  • Advanced Booking: Not necessary, but strongly recommended if you are bringing a vehicle, as car spaces fill up quickly.
  • Luggage: Large bags are typically checked in near the ticket booth and delivered
    at the dock upon arrival.
  • Sea Conditions: Travelers prone to motion
sickness should choose the larger ferries for a smoother ride.
