Moorea: The Heart-Shaped Island That Will Change You Forever

LOOKING FOR THE BEST THINGS TO DO IN MOOREA? I’ve spent some time on this heart-shaped paradise in French Polynesia, so I’ve done every activity this island has to offer… literally. While its neighbor, Bora Bora, is famous for luxury bungalows, Moorea is all about the soul. To help you plan your bucket-list trip, I’ve documented the absolute best things to do in Moorea.

The Magic of Arriving in Moorea

There is a moment on the ferry from Tahiti when the clouds part and Moorea’s jagged green spires appear—looking more like a dream than a mountain range. The air smells of sweet tiare flowers, and the ocean is a healing, turquoise sanctuary. When you dive into the lagoon, time simply stops. Moorea doesn’t just offer sights; it offers a new way to breathe.

Into the Blue: Moorea’s Best Underwater Adventures

The Moorea lagoon is a world-class playground. If you aren’t in the water, you’re missing the heartbeat of the island.

  • Snorkeling with Sharks and Stingrays: Visit the shallow sandbars near the motus (islets) where curious stingrays and harmless blacktip reef sharks swim right up to you.
  • Swimming with Humpback Whales: Between August and October, you can experience the ultimate bucket-list item. Sliding into the deep blue and hearing a mother whale sing to her calf is a spiritual experience you’ll never forget.
  • Lagoon Exploration: Whether you’re diving “Lemon Shark Valley” or snorkeling the coral gardens off Temae Beach, the 30-meter visibility makes it feel like you’re flying.

Peak Beauty: Hiking the Moorea Spires

The island’s interior is just as dramatic as its coastline.

  • Magic Mountain: A steep climb (or 4×4 tour) leads to the most iconic view in French Polynesia, overlooking the neon-blue reef.
  • The Pineapple Route: Hike through Opunohu Valley, passing ancient stone maraes (temples) and fields of the world’s sweetest pineapples.

Planning Your Trip: The Best Time to Visit Moorea

Choosing when to go depends on your goals—whether it’s hiking or whale watching.

The Dry Season (May to October)

This is the best time to visit Moorea for consistent sunshine and pleasant temperatures (77°F–86°F).

  • Best for Snorkeling: Lagoon visibility is at its peak.
  • Whale Season (August–October): Mid-August through October is the best time for in-water whale encounters. Note: You must book a licensed operator in advance.

The Shoulder Season (May & October)

These are the best value months. October is our favorite, you still get whale sightings, but with thinner crowds and better prices.

The Wet Season (November to April)

This is the tropical summer. It is hotter and more humid, but luxury resorts often offer 20-40% discounts.

The Hungry Traveler Alert: Dining & Groceries

One thing nobody tells you: dining hours in Moorea are extremely limited. Most local snacks and restaurants close between 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM. Some evenings 9 PM, but you never know.

If you aren’t at an all-inclusive resort, groceries are a must. We recommend stocking up on arrival so you aren’t left hungry when the island naps in the afternoon.

  • Champion (Vaiare): The largest supermarket, located right near the ferry dock. Stop here first!
  • Super U (Arevareva): A well-stocked option on the north side of the island.
  • Pro Tip: Use roadside fruit stands for fresh pineapples and bananas—they are cheaper and better than the stores!

PRO TIP: Book your stay on the North Shore for the best access to boat tours and top-rated restaurants!
