Things To Do In Crested Butte: Summer
After 20 years of calling Crested Butte home, I can tell you that summer is when this “tiny but mighty” town truly shines. Whether you’re seeking high-altitude adrenaline or a lazy river float, the options for adventure are truly unlimited.
- Ride and Glide: The valley is a mecca for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, with local shops like Big Al’s Bicycle Heaven providing everything from town cruisers to rugged ATVs. For those blue-bird days, grab a paddleboard or kayak and head to the Slate River for a scenic float.
- Local Culture: Downtown comes alive with the Sunday Farmers Market and vibrant Art Fairs. Don’t miss the tradition of free live music—catch Alpenglow on Monday afternoons at the Center for the Arts or Music on the Mountain every Wednesday at the CBMR base.
- Mountain Biking: Iconic rides include the high-alpine Trail 401 and the lift-served CBMR Bike Park.
- Hiking: Popular routes include the Lower Loop for scenic Slate River views and the Snodgrass Trail for wildflowers. For a major challenge, the 30-mile hike over East Maroon Pass connects Crested Butte to Aspen.
- Water Sports: Cool off with whitewater rafting in Taylor Canyon, stand-up paddleboarding on Lake Irwin, or floating the Slate River.
- Scenic Rides: Ride the Silver Queen Express chairlift to 11,400 feet for incredible views and access to the peak summit trail.
Don’t forget in September the annual Vinetok Celebration takes over town for week full of events, harvesting and celebrating the season together as a community…and many visitors too!
