Twenty miles north of the Sir Francis Drake Channel lies Anegada, the most distinctive island in the BVI—and easily one of the most enchanting. Unlike its mountainous neighbors, Anegada is a low-lying coral and limestone formation. Its name literally means “drowned land.” Fewer than 300 people live here, and that’s part of the magic: space, serenity, and scenery that doesn’t quit.

Wildlife & Wonder

Anegada is a haven for wildlife lovers. Its salt ponds are vital ecosystems where you can spot herons, ospreys, terns, and—my personal favorite—flamingos. You’ll also see something unexpected: Texas longhorn cattle, a leftover from history that now graze the island and give Cow Wreck Beach its unforgettable name.

I rented a teal Moke (highly recommend—it was part of the fun) and cruised the island in full adventure mode. I beach-hopped, explored the interior, and tracked wildlife near the salt ponds. One of the most peaceful experiences was stand-up paddling through the mangroves with Tommy Gaunt at the Anegada Beach Club. From baby sharks to stingrays and sea turtles, it felt like paddling through a secret marine nursery. Tommy offers everything: kiteboarding, e-foiling, sailing, SUP, wakeboarding—you name it.

Saddle Up or Sail In

For something unforgettable, Francis Family Horse Farm offers sunrise and sunset beach rides. I’ve done it twice, and each time it felt like riding through a dream. And if you’re sailing the BVI, Anegada is perfect for mooring offshore and hopping ashore via skiff to explore, eat, and unwind.

Lobster, Laid-Back Luxury, and Local Vibes

If you love lobster, the Anegada Lobster Festival in November is a must. Pro tip: you’ll need to place your dinner order when you make your reservation—yes, before the cut-off time—because the lobster is caught that day. As it should be.

Some of my favorite spots:

  • Sid’s Pomato Point – Great food, friendly service, and one of the best sunset walks just steps away.
  • Cow Wreck Restaurant – Run by Belle, who makes incredible food. Perfect lunch spot and no need to order ahead of time. The view? Steps from a conch-strewn, crystal-clear sea.
  • The Lobster Trap – Right on the water. Sunset, sailboats, and grilled lobster cooked over an open fire.

Where to Stay

I’ve stayed at three places on Anegada, but nothing beats the beach palapa at Anegada Beach Club. It’s not overwater—but it’s close enough, and the ocean is always within earshot. After a couple of minor travel mishaps (I have my klutzy moments), the on-site spa revived me with reflexology, cupping, and a facial that left me feeling human again.

And every evening, I kick things off island-style—with a Lime in da Coconut in hand.
